Dang. I thought I was hot stuff by becoming a Diamond Hilton Honors member last year, but it didn't involve any flying. Just putting a whole bunch of miles on my Jeep up and down Hwy 43.
I think I have been HHonors Diamond for the whole 12 years I was travelling. I always stayed at a Hilton property if one was available. Heck I would drive 30-40 miles from the job just to get the points. I have to do something with my 250.000 points. I received an email last week that if I did not book another stay before Dec. 1 or use the points that I would lose them. I already lost 50,000+ US Air points that way.
My work was mostly too far to drive. I flew and the company preferred Hertz. I was in the Hertz "President's Circle" most of the time. That just means you don't walk quite as far to your rental car.
I hear ya. I did a lot of work in Jackson and Fulton and luckily there was a Hampton Inn in Jackson. I would always stay there instead of Thomasville when I was working in Fulton because the hotel was nicer than anything in Thomasville and I would get points. I've actually got 2 nights booked in Knoxville for the game in November on leftover points.
I have burned a bunch of Hilton points over the years. Some for us, a ton for family. My wife uses my Delta miles to visit her parents in Cape May, NJ. After all that work travel, including 46 of the lower 48 states, Alaska, Mexico, all over Canada, Germany, Denmark, and Portugal, I have no need to travel. If I was younger and single I might consider going back to Denmark. They grow some fine looking women over there.
Y'all fellows rack up some miles. I get to travel some with my job... storm trips, or company vacations as I like to call em. Went to D.C. last year and a couple times to Miss. and even made one to Galveston too. A very long drive in a line/bucket truck.
I don't like long plane rides. I know I would not like a long ride in a bucket truck. Then again, the truck may be more comfortable than most planes are now. The next generation of planes they will probably have to grease the seats to get butts into them.
If you call luck being stranded in rural Mexico with no clean underwear for 7 days or stuck for 3 days in Alberta in November with nothing but the clothes on your back, sneakers, and a windbreaker in near blizzard conditions. Air Canada did give me a clean t-shirt and a shaving kit. Aero Mexico did not give me anything but a hard time.
I don't envy linemen at all. I did a little of that in my late 20's (yes, they had electricity back then), then hunted easier work. Replacing a drop out fuse around midnight on a 2300 v pole in a raging thunderstorm convinced me to change careers.
Haha no doubt. Probably the worst storm would be the tornado in Tuscaloosa. I make fun of the roll tiders all day but I wouldn't wish that chaos on anyone... well most anyways.
That tornado was a tough one. It went on up through the Birmingham suburbs.
This was the house we raised our kids in before the tornado.
After the tornado. We had moved away 10 years before but it made my stomach flip flop to see it. It still makes my stomach churn to look at the pictures. There were five people in a ground floor room and no one was hurt. It took the entire second floor and put it in the front yard.
This neighborhood was full of large 50-80 yr old oaks and a ton of homes.
I would have never been a lineman when I was young...They seemed to spend alot of time setting in the truck and there was always 4 or 5 for what seemed like a 2 man job.BUT when the shit hit the fan they were always out there getting things done. I didn't want to be up on a pole after an ice storm with the wind blowing and it being around 0 out side...I had a friend that was a lineman and was working with another man That I knew...Not my friend but the other person was killed when the pole he was on fell..It was rotten...My friend had a hard time getting over wartching his coworker die.JWlineman don't scold I know there is more to your job than I know...On another point, when ever I flew there was always at least 1 change of clothes in my carry on...And the really important stuff like tooth brush and smell good stuff in case I got lucky.
Yessir, it's tough losing a coworker. Went through that last year. Back to the clothes...I always try to over pack a little. Never know when or where you may or may not be sleeping.
