There was a story years ago that could be true of someone going into to the former Pennys hardware in Pensacola that sold guns. He went to the used gun rack selected a a .243, slipped a round into it and pointed towards his foot and just about shot his foot of. I am guessing he hit his ankle. He tried to claim that Penny left the gun loaded in the rack and that it was their fault. Someone saw him load the gun and so he got no money and I am also sure he had no idea just how destructive a .243 was.

I like my 7mm mag for 300 yard shots ... 120 gr Barnes bullets ... great flat shooter... holdover is amazingly easy to about 350... minimal thinking and tons if flexibility in the loads...

I shot 7mmRem Mags for many years. Starting with a Win Model 70 XTR,then a Browning Stainless Stalker, then a Encore Pro Hunter. All were great shooting guns.
Killed several deer across the vast clear cuts of Maine at the extended ranges using the 162gr Hornadys. Used the Speer 115gr HP for coyotes and woodchucks.
With the Browning came the use of 140gr NosPart and 115gr Speer and same with the Pro Hunter.
As stated, for the reloader the 7mag is super versatile. Especially now with the great line of no lead type bullets available.
Another great choice in a AR type action would be the 7mm-08. Choice of from 100gr to 195gr bullets. --- SAWMAN

I am surprised more people do not use the .243 for a deer cartridge here.
The .243 is my primary hog gun now and all my wife uses in indiana. Those deer are 190 to 240lbs and she’s never had one walk. Her last deer was at 225 yards and piled up. My buddies son uses the same cva single shot I use. We use the 95 grain hornady precision hunters.

CVA single shot .243 using 95 grain federal fusions. 3 hogs 2 rounds at 70 yards. First shot went through 200lb sows neck destroying the vertebrae and dropping her rite there then exited and entered the 80 pound sow standing behind her entered behind the front shoulder and was stuck just under the skin on the opposite side shoulder. Approximately 95 percent weight retention when recovered. Second shot was 80lb boar just behind the eye. Pass through. Skull was putty and dropped instantly.

I would start with one of the new 6.5 - 6 MM cartridges. 6.5 Grendel or Creedmore Also 6 MM ARC. All those are more than capable at taking a dear or elk past 300yds. If you are capable at ranges beyond 300 YDS. Also they come in AR platforms. Most people would agree it's best hunting design rifle to date.

Thumb rule - - -> anytime you pick your "parent brass" case using the 308Win and stay pretty close to the same OAL (just neck down or up) you end up with much more powder capacity which equals more velocity.
You use the same bolt (bolt face) and magazines also. This,in both AR and bolt guns (AND by some strange chance that you own a lever gun like a forum member who's name starts with a J).
The OAL of the 308Win brass'ed chamberings promotes positive feeding, extraction, and ejection also. And not excessively long mag lengths with good capacity which is not too awful heavy unless carried in combat on a LRP type mission.
I was looking into possibly getting an upper chambered in one of the WSM/WSSM chamberings but have read bad things about them being too fat(bolt face) and too short for positive feeding in the AR action guns.
    To me,with the 6C,6.5C,243Win,7mm-08,308,and 338Fed offerings,what more does a shooter,hunter need. --- SAWMAN
