Only have two rifles in .308. A single shot NEF survivor 12x scope and the semi auto C308. HK ish clone. 3x scope.
Put the 12X scope on the HK ish clone, load some 165 / 168 or heavier bullets, and see what it and the master trigger linkage can hit at 300 .
Or, see what the Bass pro shop has on line that is on sale. Either scopes with target turrets / mil dots or rifles

NOT that 90. It is not a game bullet.
My thought is a Barnes 70gr TSX. I do not remember seeing a "hunting" bullet >70grs.
    It that twist 1:7 ?? --- SAWMAN
The 90gr is the sp federal fusion hunting bullet. The 75gr fmj American eagle. I could hit with either on the gong, same poa. Haven't looked at any other bullets, factory ammo. Like to try some hornady. Its 1:8 or 1:7 forgot. I think there are 90> gr hunting rounds too.

Weatherby .257 Mag. Or .308, or 30.06, or whatever you're comfortable shooting.
Study the ballistics, pic the caliber, then the manufacturer, then the furniture, then the skinning knife, Oh, and make sure your hunting where the deer are and make sure their 300 yards away.
It's simple. Whatever SAWMAN says. He's right!
Good luck with the hunt. I usually enjoyed getting my gear ready and the anticipation of the hunt more than the skinning.
Good tenderloin takes the sting out of skinning.

And while your skinning,if someone will build a fire, put a skillet on until it is smokin' hot, throw a little butter and finely chopped onion and garlic in there . . . then as I throw you small pieces of tenderloin, throw them in the skillet for about 20 seconds, then put them on a paper plate and bring them over to me . . . well . . . thanks.
That's how we did it in Maine. --- SAWMAN

Take a look at the Ruger American line of guns. Not much money for a great gun.
The trigger alone is worth $150-$200. Sturdy, accurate guns. --- SAWMAN
Mcarbo makes a spring for the ruger American that takes about 10 minutes to change and makes the trigger as nice as a high dollar rifle not that it’s bad to begin with.

    18" bbl ?? Not the last I heard . . but . .
Part of the trigger that I referred to in my above is a do it yourself thing. Using the existing spring. Takes 10 min. Have done several guns in this manner. My guns are right at 3lbs with NO creep and NO overtravel. Nothing to order, buy, wait on,and pay 3X the cost of the spring, for shipping.
    Anyway . . . TETO --- SAWMAN

Heard good things about them, never shot one but the ruger only comes with max 18 inch barrel .308.
the compact is 18" the standard is 22". I have put shots within a 1/2" of each other at 500 yards with an 18" barrel in a .308. I wouldn't let 18" worry me out to 300 yards if a wanted a compact rifle to hunt with

It's definitely true you will lose *some* velocity out of a shorter barrel, but for hunting purposes, I wouldn't let it be a deciding factor. I watched my best friend shoot a buck at 430 yards in a clear cut with a Remington 700 16" barrel in .308 (I actually ended up with the rifle, and sold it on GCGF last year)

When it comes to modern centerfire rifles, we are the weak link. Buy a rifle, spend even more on an optic, and get in the woods.

James, check these out on the RUGER website - - > 6917,26917,26918,26916,16977.
The 308Win is a great chambering, but don't be afraid to "stray" a bit. All mentioned here will get the job done,at the longer ranges in the Fla/Ala deer woods.
These are all lefty. If you can/will shoot like "normal" folk, you have a whole bunch more choices. --- SAWMAN

    This (my) 16" 308Win will shoot like a mo-fo.
Run the ballistics . . . all else being equal what is the vel diff between a 16,18,20,and 22 inch bbl. This,at 300,400,and 500yds. Remember that pie plate ?? Can you still hold the top of it and put shot after shot in the TOP 2/3rds of it ?? If not,do you have one of them scopes with that round doo-dad on the top ?? Does it turn ?? --- SAWMAN

I have two ruger Americans one in .243 and one in .22 mag. No issues at all. Accurate and smooth. My wife has shot many deer out to 250 with the .243 using precision hunters with no issues at all. My go to deer rifle out to 400 is a browning x bolt long range in 6.5 creedmoor. Never had one walk yet on indiana size deer.

Thanks, fellas. Lots of great insight. Was headed out to shoot this am, but got tangled up. Going around noon.
