It doesn't matter if it is a hand gun or long gun, or if you are selling/buying or trading. If it crosses state lines the only legal way to do it is send it to an FFL holder in the buyers/transferees state.

or you can meet at a FFL in the buyers state and do the transfer. If a long gun you can meet in either state at a FFL.

To be 100% legal... Yes, if you are permanently transferring ownership of the firearm and the buyer/transferor is a resident of another state it must go through an FFL holder.
