I've done a bunch of swaps with folks from all over the country for gator and hog hunts. Made some great friends and killed some good deer. Also saltwater fishing and bow fishing for stingrays and sharks (when it was legal). My son asked why somebody would want to shoot stingrays. I said, "'cause they don't have em in Illinois".

Who ever says the wild ones aren’t any good. Just send them to me and I’ll keep filling the freezer. If you do get a rank boar hog. A cooler of ice and some vinegar or just salt for a couple of days will take care of that. Just keep draining the water off of it. Big boars make the best sausage. IMO. Now i will say if you run a big boar hog with dogs or make a bad shot and he runs a bit. Sometimes they can get a little rank. As far as the fat content I think a lot of us that can run feeders where it’s legal do use them. That takes care of your fat problem. I have a 600lb feeder that spins three times a day and also throw an extra 120lb on ground every other week or so. My wife and I only eat the meat we harvest. Very seldom will buy meat from store. The hog posted was straight off the feeder. D31413C1-7E6F-4468-BF96-FED03C9C2F7B.jpeg

That hog is just right. Not 2-3 inches of fat like a domestic. If they've got enough fat to make sausage, that's all I need. I'm with you on the wild meat, folks said my kids didn't know what beef tasted like tip they moved out. Pretty close to true.

Lol. I hear ya. I’ll substitute some good venison for beef any day. Spend three weeks in Indiana every November. Bring home enough venison for the whole year.

I've been told by some folks that wild hogs either do not have enough meat on them to be worthwhile or that the meat is not good.

Is there any truth to that?

Here in Escambia and Santa Rosa Florida counties, I've never tasted a bad one. I speculate it's the good crops they eat. We take the shoulders, back strap, and hams. Not enough to fool with on the ribs.

Went scouting today with Sawman. Here's some fresh wallows and rooting. Did find a box turtle next to them, so the box turtle might have been digging...but really suspect it was hogs. Photos don't convey how big the digs are.

Makes me wonder if their is something with box turtles and hogs. We have them at all our feeders when the hogs move in.
