I've got these, but haven't tried em yet.
Rebel, have you tried any steel cased yet? If so, how does it do?
I am hoping for good results. I have a 10.5" AR47 with a 1:10 twist that does very well with tula. I'm hoping this 1:9.75" can do as good. I bet there's a bunch of guys on here wondering why I would run rotten steel cased but I look at it as a high performance engine that can run on pump gas.
I'm also surprised that no one commented on leveling my rail both directions for my barrel level. I've had to explain that quite a few times to people.

Yep steel shoots great, like match great. The tul was the most accurate with my wiggly shooting. 123g and the 154g. It's beyond impressive. Trigger can be tuned lighter as well. At 5lbs or so now. Ruger has a home run with this one.

FYI: If anyone is looking for a American Ruger in 7.62 x 39

This company The Shootin shop, Abilene Texas, has 5 of them, you can put on Lawaway for 90 days with 20% down, no interest, no extra charges.
I just did it, so if you have an interest, its an easy process.
Purchase it on gun broker, when payment comes, click personal check, the contact info will come up and you can tell them you want to put this item on layaway.
Just putting this out there if anyone is interested

Hmmm the Russian 5.45 surplus ammo is supposedly match grade boat tail.
If you want to throw 22 calibers down range for fun and want any kind of a real challenge then go with 22 long rifle at like 200-300 yards. That Russian 22 caliber service rifle ammo is going to get scarce and quickly

    Custom 5.45x39 Savage Axis

    03-19-2017, 09:57 PM

Greetings team. I made some reference to this build in my 5.45 reloading thread, well its pretty much done.

Started with a Savage Axis II XP Hardwood in 223. Ordered a custom McGowen Precision Barrel in 5.45x39, Medium Target Contour, 22 inch barrel, recessed target crown. Waited about 3 months for that to come in.

Bolt only required a very minor amount of material removed to open it up for the slightly wider case, so I will be able to run regular 7n6 in addition to my reloads. Ordered a custom endmill and spent all of three minutes on the mill getting it done.

Swapping the barrel on the Axis is real easy. Acquire barrel wrench, secure barrel in vice, loosen barrel nut, remove barrel. Snug new barrel down on a go gauge to headspace, bolt should have slight resistance on final downturn, toss it back in the vice, tighten barrel nut, good to go.

Part of the goal here was building a bolt action companion to the first wz 88 Tantal I built, so I stripped down the stock and restained it in the same red as the Tantal furniture (extremely advanced custom formulation of pigmentations and mordant that I brewed up, I don't feel comfortable posting the recipe on a public forum but will share via pm if anyone is interested). I did have to open the stock up for the larger diameter barrel, nothing crazy.

Added a DNZ one piece mount, huge fan of their mounts, light weight, rock solid. Currently I threw the factory scope back on, Weaver Kaspa 3-9, but once I get my loads down I plan on going Leupold Custom Shop for a custom BDC reticle tailored to my loads. Their custom shops pricing is surprisingly reasonable.

Added a Blue Force Gear sling, pivot and pan bipod. Polished up the bolt a bit, treated all metal in Militec.

Here's a before and some afters.

Will post range and accuracy results if I ever get to the range. Questions/comments appreciated as always.

Pretty much what I have in mind. I think I'll put it in a Boyd's At-one stock. I'd like to start with a bergara as of now. That may change.

I have a CZ 527 in 7.62x39 . This rifle took its first deer this last Sunday. Very light and handy rifle. It’s nice to be able to see the shot through the scope with minimal recoil of the 7.62x39.
