Another newbie question for yall. Am trying to buy bullets for my .223 for reloading, and most of the bullets are described as 22 cal, and .224 diameter. What is the actual size I need to purchase. Tks
While not common there are other sizes for .22 caliber bullets so it pays to check the precise diameter. For example the old .22 savage Hipower is:22 caliber diameters out to .223 to .224, so it's really the same.
When you're buying bullets, most companies show .22 cal/.224 bullets.
So to keep you sure, google it, or look here.

.224 is stated on the sierra boxes that I purchased the other day.the older .22 Hornets were .223 but they have changed the newer ones to .224 I think.
as MarkS stated the bullet you need for loading your .223 is a .224 diameter bullet
Just bought my first AR-15.Now that you know the Dia. [.224] the question probably will be , where can I find any .224 bullets ?
What rifle AR or bolt gun are you wanting to reload for ?
yes sir...correct...they were probably 40gr #1200 and .224. The 40gr. #1100 and 45gr. #1110 are .223 and all 3 are listed for the Hornet..224 is stated on the sierra boxes that I purchased the other day.
in case you didn't know...they have different barrel twist rates....that would determine what .224 bullet you might want to look for.Just bought my first AR-15.
Remember, "The only dumb question is the one NOT asked"Thanks again for the response guys! I reloaded shotgun shells in my college days (Mid 70’s), but this is my first attempt at rifle and eventually pistol ammo. Obviously have a lot to learn. Gonna order a good reloading guide asap so I don’t have to bug y’all over every question I have come up. Again, thanks, am really enjoying this website.
mine were 53 grain flat based hp bullets with a very thin jacket. Intended more for target shooting by Sierra, but some use them for varmit bullets that sierra cautions against. Will make nasty wounds on larger critters when fired with full loads from a 20 inch barreled rifle. Will work in any common rifling twist rate. That barrel is likely 1 in 9.yes sir...correct...they were probably 40gr #1200 and .224. The 40gr. #1100 and 45gr. #1110 are .223 and all 3 are listed for the Hornet.
Op was as below, but we do drift about here lol.forgive me somehow i thought we were speaking about .223 Hornet bullets from your first post.
yes the 53 gr are for the .223 guns .22-250s and the like...not the Hornet

As of 2007, the .22 Savage Hi-Power is no longer made in the United States. In Europe, the .22 Savage Hi-Power is called the "5.6×52mmR", and is still made by RWS,[4] Norma, Sellier & Bellot, and Wolf Ammunition, and exported to the U.S. market.
It is a popular round for break open guns due to having a rim and is used to shoot small deer.
