Another newbie question for yall. Am trying to buy bullets for my .223 for reloading, and most of the bullets are described as 22 cal, and .224 diameter. What is the actual size I need to purchase. Tks

22 caliber diameters out to .223 to .224, so it's really the same.

When you're buying bullets, most companies show .22 cal/.224 bullets.

So to keep you sure, google it, or look here.

While not common there are other sizes for .22 caliber bullets so it pays to check the precise diameter. For example the old .22 savage Hipower is:

    Bullet diameter.228 in (5.8 mm)

As of 2007, the .22 Savage Hi-Power is no longer made in the United States. In Europe, the .22 Savage Hi-Power is called the "5.6×52mmR", and is still made by RWS,[4] Norma, Sellier & Bellot, and Wolf Ammunition, and exported to the U.S. market.
It is a popular round for break open guns due to having a rim and is used to shoot small deer.

the older .22 Hornets were .223 but they have changed the newer ones to .224 I think.

as MarkS stated the bullet you need for loading your .223 is a .224 diameter bullet

Now that you know the Dia. [.224] the question probably will be , where can I find any .224 bullets ?
What rifle AR or bolt gun are you wanting to reload for ?

.224 is stated on the sierra boxes that I purchased the other day.

Thanks again for the response guys! I reloaded shotgun shells in my college days (Mid 70’s), but this is my first attempt at rifle and eventually pistol ammo. Obviously have a lot to learn. Gonna order a good reloading guide asap so I don’t have to bug y’all over every question I have come up. Again, thanks, am really enjoying this website.

Remember, "The only dumb question is the one NOT asked"
Lots of "how to" u-tube video's on reloading, just remember when 3 or more say the same thing, then it's probably good advice.

    yes sir...correct...they were probably 40gr #1200 and .224. The 40gr. #1100 and 45gr. #1110 are .223 and all 3 are listed for the Hornet.
mine were 53 grain flat based hp bullets with a very thin jacket. Intended more for target shooting by Sierra, but some use them for varmit bullets that sierra cautions against. Will make nasty wounds on larger critters when fired with full loads from a 20 inch barreled rifle. Will work in any common rifling twist rate. That barrel is likely 1 in 9.

What reloading Equipment to you have ? press, dies, powder thrower, scale ?
The cold hard facts of reloading today, specifically for the 223 are that there aren't and small rifle primers, few powders, no full length die sets, some .224 bullets.
    My suggestion;
1.tell us where you are located
    2. Ask if anyone is willing to do a show & tell , remember to wear your has mat suit
OR, 3. ask if anyone has extra equipment they would be willing to loan or sell you including brass, bullets, powder, and primers.

where the confusing issues came in for me was what seemed to be somewhat confusing info that Zeroed in posted that you quoted.

He said that .22 bullets measured from .223 to .224 and were the same...when they are not. That is why I confirmed for the OP the diameter he was looking for is .224. .223 diameter .22 caliber bullets are for use in older .22 Hornet rifles. The newer .22 Hornet rifles use a .224 bullet. That may be one reason you see both listed under .22 caliber in many places.
