You are just barely breaching something has a long complicated history. The worst history of slavery say from about 900 to 1500 for white Europeans was in eastern Europe and the Balkans mostly for the slavic peoples from which our word slave is derived. We are forgetting Romans and other here since that was earlier. Starting with the viking raiders going down the Russian Rivers to Constantinople taking slaves with them bound for the muslim world. The girls went to harems and the boys got castrated. The ultimate buyers were Muslims. Jewish Merchants may have been the middlemen. After the Mongols came, the slaving trade in that region probably got taken over by the golden horde and similar Turkic converts to the religion of 'peace' as muslims like to call it.

I think you are referring to slave raiders hitting western and southern Europeans. In places like Sicily where the farmers were forced to live in the towns that were walled and not in farm houses because of northafrican corsairs that raided the coast. They also raided western shipping until the time of the early years of our republic.
