Do all of y’all that are getting their sbr paperwork approved realize that from that day forward you cannot cross state lines with your sbr unless you have written permission from the state you are entering. ? Asking for a friend.
Or, if the item is no longer in a NFA configuration

Is it written permission or just notifying the state in which you are going? In states where SBR are legal, of course.

From what I understand it’s in the form of a letter that is good for various amounts of time, depending on what state you are entering. You also have to provide some sort of an agenda. I am by no means an authority on the matter so please do your homework on this.

“Permission” for interstate transport is from the feds, not the states. Other than the states allowing the item or not in the first place...

Little Jack’s weblink is what you need. Goto section 13.8 in Chapter 13: “Required Reports and Notifications to ATF”.

    NFA handbook

    It explains the Form 5320.20

You’ll notice that suppressors/silencers are not on the list of items requiring “permission” to cross state lines.

Yes, you should always be aware of your travel plans if the state you’re traveling to or through doesn’t allow the item in question.

Yep this is why I sold my first and only SBR like ten years ago when I first got word I was moving to Maine soon. I was not about to go through the hassle of formally asking permission to travel across state lines a dozen times. I put it on consignment at a class 3 dealer and I took a 40% hit but it saved me time and effort

Couldn't you just swap the SB with a 18" barrel and mail the short barrel (SB) to your destination and get only 1 permission from the state you're visiting?

Good idea, but it could be in the ATFs eyes that it was made in that state? Grey area.

Doing a 5320.20 is no big deal to me. List the firearm, destination, how long of time, why (shooting fun at brother’s farm), and that it will be returned to my home state when done. I would put the from and to dates covering a whole year to cover multiple trips.

Was only asked one time when moving from Indiana to NC why I did not list all NFA items. Told them the rest were being left in a safety deposit box.

The ATF director, Steven Dettelbach , testified recently that the absolute drop dead date for this hijack to the 2nd A, (my words, not his) is May 31, 2023.

Don’t you also have to show them the item whenever they say and or pop over to your place for a visit to check on said items??

If they have a search warrant, otherwise don’t come in my house, and ATF doesn’t go around routinely checking on individually owned NFA items anyway. Have owned such for 50 years now.

I was “visited“ once. Stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC. Lived in the barracks. 2nd Medical Battalion, 2nd FSSG, 2nd MarDiv. Kept my M1A1 TSMG in our unit’s armory. Got a call to report to the Provost Marshall’s office. ATF agent introduced himself. Investigating ammo thefts. He was notified by ATF I had brought my TSMG to the base. “If people find out you have a Thompson, you might be offered stolen ammo for sale. If that happens, here’s my phone number, call me.” Never offered stolen ammo. Was given a can of ammo to shoot while at the rifle range if I let some instructors each shoot a mag full at the 1000” range. “Doc keep the can and the brass if you want it.”

Another sea story for another time, but I was designated an alternate armorer for my battalion, so I had 24/7 armory access anyway, but kept firearms in the barracks if I wanted to go shooting on the weekends. I doubt the military places that much trust in members now a days...this was 1975-1977…I was a first class hospital corpsman.
