A little short on revolver experience, what is a "prelock" Smith and how to I determine if a 629 classic is or isn't?

is there a little hole on the left side just above the cylinder release latch? if so it has a lock. Smith and wesson's response to government oversight during the clinton administration.

model and dash will be stamped on the yolk.

classic is a full lug revolver.

prelock 629 classic 5in is quite a piece.

Model 629 classic, 629-4 on yoke, 5" barrel, no hole above cylinder release. So this is a pre-lock? When was the change made?

    Also have a 686 4" w/no hole, I know it was from the 90s.

yours is certainly a no lock

the lock was added on the dash 5 after the mid 90s, (99 perhaps) IIRC

do you have original box and papers for the 629?

Are you considering selling your 629?

what dash is on yoke of 686?

Model 686-5, bought new around 2000.

I still have the box and paperwork for the 629, a cardboard box that's really too thin for the pistol but it has the correct label. This thing has the sweetest trigger I've ever felt, somebody did some great work on it.

Not really interested in selling it right now, but thanks a million for the information, both of you. Best of luck finding the one you want.
