I have been looking at 20" uppers on PSA's website and some of them have CHF in the title\description. What does that mean? Thanks in advance, Murphy.

I always think of some viking looking guy outside in the snow hammering a 16" barrel in the fire. Pretty sure it's not that rustic or manly anymore.

As pretty much said several times before, cold hammer forged. But for PSA, basically that means it's one of the FN barrels they get from down the street from them in Columbia, SC. Think that is their only line of barrels that are sole source.

Would they use a cold fire for that or just a cold hammer, or just a cold Viking?

As a hobby, I measure bore wear in all my rifles in which I have a throat erosion gage for. Take "plain" 4140 steel (a common bbl steel), not chrome lined and non nitrided, for example, and CHF it into a bbl vs button rifled. A CHF 4140 bbl will last longer (say 10-20% longer) than a non CHF 4140 bbl. So, for longer bbl wear, CHF is a positive. Throw in CHF + chrome lined or nitrided, and it will last a lot longer.

Hot fire, for obvious reasons. But the Viking is cold natured at the soul, that's where the true hardness and reliability of the barrel comes from. At least that's what I learned during my years of training. ;)
And by training I mean watching Youtube...
