I have a 2017 express cargo van that is stuck in high gear. It only has 60,000 miles on it so I’m not ready to replace the entire transmission. From my understanding each gear has a solenoid but it’s in the transmission.

I used Webbs Transmission in Fort Walton Beach in the past but I can’t get them by phone. I’m in Freeport or 50 minutes east of Ft Walton. Do yall have any recommendations on someone that can help me out?

Sorry, I'm no help. I hate being at the mercy of any mechanic. I actually went to school to be a mechanic, I learned that I didn't want to be one, but know enough to do most of my own work. Automatic transmissions are one thing I do take to a specialist, mainly because I don't have specialty tools. Sounds like your on the right track with your problem being in the valve body. Good luck.

Any trouble codes? My old F-150 started refusing to shift and actually registered a trouble code. Turned out to be a speed sensor. Cost me a little over $20 for the part, a crawl under the truck, a little drip of trans fluid, and good to go. Hope yours turns out that easy.

Adams Garage at Opp AL, about hour north of you. Folks from all over use them, it’s strictly a transmission repair shop

OBDII driver to read your computer, so you don’t piss the day away troubleshooting with the Mk 1 eyeball.

If it’s a solenoid you can order and replace yourself in an hour with a couple Jack stands and a screwdriver.

I'd check the fluid level first and foremost. If the level is fine, then I'd check the speed sensor as well as reading any codes. This is usually an easy fix and if you have the 6L80 or 6L90, you shouldn't be seeing any issues from that transmission for another 150k miles. Seems like its going into limp mode from low fluid or a bad sensor.

Yes a mobile mechanic with a laptop would be ideal. I’m not interested in making the investment but willing to pay for their time.

No limp mode. I can mash on it right now with the selector in park and it goes into a bog as the tranny slips in one of the higher gears. Fluid looks good and still clear. Selector moves on the exterior of tranny along with the column shifter. Yes looking for someone to read codes

I spoke to Adams and he referred me to Liles Transmission and auto repair in Andalusia. It sounds like only a few shops have a computer capable of diagnosis transmission issues for this make and model. The dealership is always an option but I’m willing to drive a few extra miles to avoid that.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction @DixieReb

I don’t even know where Lile’s is and never heard of that shop and I’m from Andalusia but if Adams Garage recommends them then got to be ok

When you say express I'm going to assume it's a Chevy or GMC.
4l60 or 4l80 transmission? Sure sounds like a solenoid, or wiring harness on this one.
Dodge also gets stuck in 4th (1:1) when the solenoid pack fails. I would go straight to the dealer on this one. You want OEM solenoids and harness. Can always have the dealer diagnose it to know for sure. Hour or two labor on their machine.

Adam’s is my go to and they won’t steer you wrong. Nick at Adam’s rebuilt my Z71 Silverado’s 4L60E about 7 years ago and it’s been going strong since then

Either you got lucky or he knows what he's doing. Those things are temperamental

I just swapped out a 4L80 last winter. Monster transmission is who I ordered from and exchanged transmissions with online. They build with the good stuff. It’s held up for 15k miles towing 15k pounds daily.

Nick does the Chevy’s and he’s very good
They build a lot of transmissions for racers and mud-trucks
