We drove across the NE corner of Wyoming yesterday on the back roads because we were bored with the interstate. We were going to Devil's Tower National Monument. I have traveled all over this country and a lot of Canada. I have never seen more deer and pronghorns in one day in my life. Lots of dog towns too.
Oh yeah, prairie dogs. Today back on I-90 west bound out of Gillette, WY there was one area that the dog holes were on either side of the highway for a 3+ mile stretch and as far as you could see to each side. Thousands of them.
Been on guided PD hunts three different times. ABSOLUTELY the very best "no meat" hunt your hard earned money could ever be spent on.
My hunts took place in South Dakota quite a few years ago. I have heard that some major rules have changed now . . since the hunts are so popular. Times of the year, equipment used, and even some bag limits are what I am hearing now . . in some parts of the country.
My main suggestion/recommendation if you are contemplating booking a hunt is ---> communicate with your guide, take his recommendations seriously, communicate with him as far as gear, clothing, firearm, ammo, and support equipment for the weapons used.
Hunts differ somewhat. However most are somewhat the same. You can taylor your hunt in various ways. Think about this long and hard before you book your hunt. Of course, also, check the credentials of your guide/outfitter.
The PD hunts can also get you badger and called coyotes. Hunts are fairly cheap compared to the "out west" big game hunts. However, depending on your hunt, you could spend some serious cash on ammo. I am also hearing that some guides will not allow you to use hand loads. Back in the day,we used to have our reloads drop shipped to the guide. Now . . . . ??? ---SAWMAN
