So, my mother-in-law is looking for a firearm to keep at her ranch. She suffers significantly from arthritis in her hands so I've essentially excluded all handguns. They have horses so I've excluded shotguns.

Based on some measurements and some estimation the longest possible shot she could take is about 400yds on her property. I can't honestly imagine a scenarios where she takes a shot over 250yds and would honestly be unlikely to engage beyond 100yds.

Assuming small predators (bobcats, coyotes, and misc two-legged type) I had two thoughts. My first thought was your standard AR-15 cambered in 223 with a shake awake red dot. My second thought was something like a 357mag cambered lever action.

I want to try to take her shooting before she gets anything, but I'm looking for options, something not too far out of the box. Easy to shoot off hand and effective at 200yds.

ARs are powerful enough for predators, have very easy recoil, quick follow on shot options, easy to reload and train on, relatively inexpensive, ammo is available....lots of advantages. IMHO

also, consider the beretta tomcat semi-auto handgun in 25 or 32. it's tip-up barrel design makes it a viable alternative semi-auto for folks with arthritis in the hands.

I think an AR would be good for arthritic hands. Oversized charging handle and a grip she would be comfortable with. I like the bolt .223 idea too but with an AR she wont have to work the bolt for follow up shots. Pull a big ass charging handle and let it rip

I would agree. A 14.5 inch Wylde barrel with the needed pinned or welded flash hider or compensator to get to a legal 16 inch barrel length. Speer Gold Dot 75 grain SP. Red dot is good but moderately priced 1X6 or 1X8 could be more useful for those potential critter shots. However, this conversation is meaningless without the shooter mounting the gun for fit before purchase.

I think you all hit the nail on the head, the AR seems like the way to go. A quality reliable AR with a couple mags quality BAD and oversized charging handle.
