The wife and I were watching some show about airplanes or something tonight and they mentioned that this plane taxied to runway 9 for takeoff. My wife is a smart person, has a fancy degree and is a college professor. Her dad was a pilot and flight instructor and she flew with him numerous times, but apparently never really paid attention to what was happening. She asked, "Why does every airport have runways with the same name?"
Me: "huh?"
Her: "Every airport has a runway named after a number, and they're almost always the same numbers. Why don't they call em Bob, or Ted, or Bill or Tom or something."
Me: "they used to all be call Sam, but that was really confusing so they started naming them after compass headings."
Her: "Who was Sam?"
Me: "Orville and Wilbur's cousin. They invented the airplane. He invented the airport."
Her: "I never knew that."
