Back in 1990-1991 I got my first S&W 3rd Gen. pistol, a 4506. For years I've been wanting a 4516 and finally ran across what I felt was a good deal. All the 3rd Gen. guns are getting hard to find in good condition and then when you find one they want an arm and a leg lol.

Picked this one up for about $570 with all associated fees included. Condition is really nice. Overall a nice addition to my S&W 3rd Gen. pistol collection.

Anyone else like the 3rd Gen. Smith's ?

    I've got the following:

    4506
    4516-1
    457
    457S
    410
    4006

I'm wanting the 410S and missed a good deal recently on GB of all places. I was gifted a dozen hi-cap mags some years back for the .40 series of pistols.

I'm needing something to represent the 9mm clan, I'm on the lookout.

Almost bought a 4516 about 10 years ago. But I wasn't willing to pay the asking price at the time. How does this platform shoot in .45?

    I have a 6904, that I'm not fond of. Since I got a 6906. Also have 5906 and 4006.

Those are the ones my dad was issued. Iv always had the nostalgic love for them because that what he carried - Before they switched to Glocks.

Love old school Smiffs, be they revolvers or these 3rd Gen Semi-autos.

Good, reliable, accurate firearms; with the added plus of being good to 'pistol whip' someone when you are outta ammo!

    Congrats OP!

I recall being in my local transfer FFL back in the early 2000s and they had just gotten in a batch of 4th Gen S&W semis LE trade ins, some version of full size and compact 9MMs. I looked them over - I think the prices were in the $300 range, give or take. Then I saw a 66-3 4" with box, wood stocks & plastics for $350 on consignment and bought that instead.

I have a 9mm 3913LS - absolutely love it. It eats anything and I can handle it very well one handed. Not too big to carry either.
probably the best 3rd gen semi imho... while not a huge fan of the 3rd gens, a 1006 or 1076 has always been on my list. ive owned a few but none have stayed. don't get me started on k or j frames from the same era tho!

Have a chief special 45 and if I could change anything, I wish it was a stainless frame(especially with the extra weight).

Had a 4506 that would no-spit feed empty cases.

Top of the line SA/DA handguns IMHO. Own a 3913 and 6906. Always looking for a 1006, sold mine stupidly when I was a lot younger.
