I’ve got a 1964 model 94 that I picked up. Not real familiar with them. Looking to find out about the finish on the receiver. Looks to be refinished or a bad attempt at a refinish. Seems to be a bunch online that are similar.

Barrel looks untouched to me. I’ve got more than that in it but the money helped somebody out that needed it and I got a gun out of the deal.

Post 64 receivers are known to wear very fast. Most you find will be the natural process of wearing and become what is called a Patina which is little to no finish left but no rust either. Yours looks to have been painted or possibly cera coated.

Looks like somebody tried to give it the appearance of a brass receiver model sort of like the original Golden Boy Henry. Can't really tell by the picture but stick a magnet to it just to make sure it's not brass

Not being able to see it real good. but a lot of the older 94 rec. were heat treated in away that would make them turn a type of red looking finish when they were blued and when the finish would wear it would look some thing like that.so this possibly what you have . this just a short explanation. Just my 5 cents jj

Post 64 receivers (up until ‘92 I believe) were made of sintered steel and didn’t hold a blueing very well.
Could have something to do with that.

Use a sharp razor blade and try to scrape off a TINEY SECTION of the color.
Looks to be too thick to be naturally changing color.
Betcha it is a shitty cerakote job. But why ??
Wonder if it was done buy a guy named Tim ??
Can you see where it has been taped off ?? ---- SAWMAN

What’s the serial number or the first 3 numbers of the serial number? I’m betting it’s one of the sintered steel models. The finish wore off, it wouldn’t take blueing, so the owner did some kind of home-grown cerakote job.
As long as it shoots, it’s still worth $400 these days.

Serial number starts with 272. Looks to be ‘64 model. It doesn’t look like cerakote It’s very slick like brass. I know it isn’t brass. The original owner probably had no idea what cerakote is. This cam from a collection of old mausers and JC Higgins. Just don’t see him having this one cerakote.

Shoot it and enjoy it. I’ve got several 94s in mint condition and the one that I’ve enjoyed the most is a beat up 1961 that I gave $70 for in the late 80s.
