Figured I'd start this here so it won't have to be moved.

In another thread I opined that ignorance and fear are immovable corner stones of many a belief/notion.

It has been my experience that ignorance in general often results in fear, and that fear left to grow in ignorance often results in intentional ignorance. FWIW, intentional ignorance is knowing exactly what you don't know, but intentionally avoiding/shunning knowledge in order to maintain a chosen state of ignorance. IMO, many a "respected" (feared) organization exists and thrives by capitalizing on both ignorance and fear.

    Circle of insanity? Coping mechanism?

    Discuss.

I am guilty of just going along with the mob because I am too lazy to research the topic . To my credit these are not often and I do not use a bullhorn ,pitchfork ,or bring a torch to the scene. Watching the news we are mis-informed ....not watching the news we are un-informed . Discussing things with some people make me think they just got off a spaceship or escaped a nut house . I marvel at how we found the exit from the caves but then again something must be said about the few that did find it and capitalized on it, otherwise .......I do hold out hope we will work it out before we go extinct

I have always believed that there is no excuse for ignorance. Whenever I have come across something that is new to me and I have concerns with, I start doing some homework to get the facts straight. Of course, when searching for the facts, you have to discern from where the information is coming. You have to find credible sources. An educated individual is one who seeks to learn and does so. Knowledge is paramount. Never settle for the status quo or believe everything you see and hear. In this day and age, too many people (politicians and the media) are trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the American people by putting out a lot of misinformation which is usually flat-out lies. If you are going to believe the lies without knowing the real truths, then you will certainly live in fear because of your uncertainty and doubts. Get educated, informed, and empowered. Be as the wolf and not the sheep.

Ignorance is always gonna be there. We don't know/understand everything. As Tack' says, it's what we do with or about ignorance once it's discovered.

Each person has their own priorities. Maybe you don't need or want to know how your favorite soda is made, you just like it, and that's that.

But what about government, laws, and such, that dictate how we can live, or doctrine that people live their very lives by?

Herd mentatily was mentioned above. Are we living in full knowledge and understanding, or just going along to get along? Point, knowledge can be frightening when it makes one question what someone has "known" for quite some time.

Words have been weaponized. The term conspiracy theorist shuts down any further thinking by people who have no idea they’re the final products of social engineering and indoctrination. People seek safety in numbers and obedience instead of opening the mind. They then have the fear of being rediculed. Its by design. “Herd mentality” is a disease.

intentional ignorance in the face of hard evidence indicating otherwise, means the person does not want to admit they were wrong, as they usually are hard convinced of their own "rightness"

usually in my experience, it is a leftist progressive liberal who holds such views..

There are many among us with immovable beliefs, convictions, and/or positions. Are those based on verifiable facts, and/or supported by evidence that can be evaluated/experimented upon and consistently produce the same findings/results? Or, are they based on emotion, possibly guided by ignorance/fear? I like how this makes me feel...

Opinion. There is much that cannot be conclusively proven or disproven. We can accept that as, at best, a 50/50 probability, and move on; not necessarily discard. Or, we can choose left/right, IMO, at the moment that choice is made, based more on emotion than fact(s). And there we return to ignorance, quite possibly fueled by fear.

I’ll always be ignorant but figured out a long time ago that fear of the inevitable is a pointless waste. I think that fear can be addictive considering how some people stay glued to the media. Anyways, interesting post.

Totally agree that some thrive in an environment of fear. They revel in the caring and sympathy lavished on them because of their fear. Dependent.

ETA; No idea (ignorance) how I double-quoted, but not afraid it might happen again.
