    It looks to me like in the Stihl video they are going backward to what I was taught. Run your file from the outside to the inside instead of inside out. You don't want to roll steel to the outside with your file to break off and be dull quicker...hope that makes sense.

    The teeth on most files are meant to cut in one direction for sure.

    I'll use this diagram...run the file in the direction of the arrow.

    When you come from the other way it can roll steel out and when that chips off your chain dull faster is what the old guy told me. Hate to think I have been doing it wrong all this time...my saws sure cut good :)

    Can you put a chain on backwards ??
    Do all you guys lube the bar roller ?? ---- SAWMAN

    I have known of academic types with PhD.s that put on their chains backwards and could not figure out what was wrong. I sometimes forget to lube that sprocket on the end of the bar. There are some special bars out there that do not have that sprocket.
