So, I'm in the market for a bigger safe. Went up to Scott's today to look around and really like the brownings insides. Have all but made my mind up on the dlx45. The price is steep, but I like the door rack and the shelving inside. Just looking for some feedback on what everyone likes about their particular safe. I have looked at a bunch, only true one I eliminated were the Cannons. The rest seem to be about the same in this size safe, just different layouts inside, most being particle board inside shelving, where the Brownings have rubber coated steel shelfs.

When it comes to the safe I will eventually buy, I just want pre installed lights and a good fire rating. More than 30 minutes at 1200 degrees which the cheap ones have.

. Yea I have been looking for awhile now, researching as I went. This is a lifetime purchase and cheap is not the way to go.

Yeah, as soon as I think I can finally buy my lifetime safe, something else claims the money. Such is life. And I don't like to go cheap on things. When it comes to safes, like you said, they all pretty much offer the same type fit and function. The money comes when you want something like 1+ hour fire protection for 1600 degrees rating. With that rating, you get weight too. So no one is hauling it out either. Wife said, I can buy all the guns I want to buy. I just have to have a safe to protect them all. She is regretting ever saying those words.

I dont know how true it is, but I have been told that the safes you see at the gun stores aren't the same quality you'll see at a locksmith / safe shop, because they are trying to meet a pricepoint at gunshops, even if you decide on one, I would go to an actual safe shop and get their opinions on safes.

Dan, have you compared the Liberty to the Brownings? Although the Liberty's are nice, the Browning is above the quality of the Liberty IMO.

    OP,
Dont restrict yourself to local purchases if you're looking at lifetime safes. Reasearch AMSEC and Fort Knox. Not sure they're available locally, but the kingpin players in at home gun safes.

I haven't, and I haven't seen or heard Browning make anything that was anything less than top quality.

However, I usually like to go with companies who specialize and excel in one particular thing.

Does browning manufacture their own , or is it someone else's rebranded product? It could be good either way, I just don't know enough about it.

Buying from a specialist takes the guesswork out IMO.

Scott's has got some nice safes in the $2,000 plus range but don't assume Browning equals quality. That used to be the case but like all the other companies they are out to maximize profits. Heck, I saw a Browning safe in Sam's club in Panama City for $1,000 and it was as cheaply made as the Cannon right next to it.
I wore a Browning down hunting coat for years and it was great. I saw the modern-day version of this coat at Academy last year and it was more like a down shirt. Very thin.
Browning still makes some good stuff but you are going to pay for it. They also make some crap.

I purchased an Amsec BF series. Wasn't cheap, weighs a ton (well 1800 lbs) empty. It has a 1/2 inch steel door and makes me feel well protected. A good safe will last a lifetime.

On a side note does anyone have a sturdy safe, and if so how do you like the safe? I have outgrown my current safe and would like to upgrade.
Not meaning to sidetrack the thread just thought it was another good safe to look at.

I have Liberty Franklin 25 that was $1995 at Mike Wards in Mobile. Ordered it online from Lowes when it was on sale, used a coupon and paid $1350 with tax and delivered. Feel like it is a steal for that price. It came with the d-drive lock too.

Mine is a Red Head. 1200F for 30 minutes.
Bought it at Bass Pro Shops in Spanish Fort in '09.
Heck it time to replace the battery in the digital lock.

Sturdy was actually my first choice but my buddy is a safe and vault technician. He gave me a good deal on the Amsec. If it had not been for him I would have probably got the Sturdy. They make good safes. Not as pretty as some but they are strong.

The Sturdy is a beast, will not win any beauty contests but one of the best. I believe it was a Sturdy that on another forum had been attacked and really messed up but not breached, The company took it back and replaced it for the owner.

I know looking at the sturdy safes they are not the best looking, but it all falls back on the old saying "don't judge a book by its cover." I know some of the other safes are much nicer, but my main reasoning to buy safe is not for looks but for strength and fire security. Thanks for all the input.
