The question is what we should be buying now.

    Heritage and ruger wranglers

    Sub $200 pistols can’t last.

And a brand new mustang was only $5k
Actually a new 1965 Mustang was about half that but wages were also much lower so it evens out.
I worked after school for several years for $1.65 an hour.
The cheapest I remember gas being was around 20 cents a gallon.
I remember seeing cardboard 55 gallon drums full of milsurp rifles at W.T. Grants department store for $13 each.

Back then - I walked 5 miles to school, in the snow, up hill (both ways!), and I got paid a dime a week for 20 hours of work, and that got me 10 penny candies, that I sold for 2 cents at school.

Might suprise you. I've shot mine for years without a hitch. Another thing the cheap ones are also very simple. Aka colt peacemaker. The only picking point is the crap cast frame. I think the ruger and the heritage share the same type.

I have some Mausers I have had for 50 years. If you set down and look at what I made there and what I paid then versus what I make and pay for one now the percentage works out about the same.

It was the Post Wars and a gov not unfriendly to firearms that allowed the U.S. and foreign milsurp. Those prices converted to todays dollars buying power verses then would show most of the difference I think.

In 70 years, people may look at today's prices and and say the same things or worst case "they could own guns?". Slightly over a year ago you could buy a complete upper and lower an have an AR for $399, others at $450. I said buy cheap stack deep on them and sub $10 Magpul mags too.
