Most Combat within the 300 yard Kill Zone is Fatal! One reason I like the 7.62x39 is the same reason the Russians choose it and why the germans chose an assault rifle in 7.92x33. Most combat is at much closer ranges. I do not have the skill to reliably hit a man size target at extended ranges under real conditions that different from a square range. Even spotting someone at such distance and knowing it is someone that needs to get versus some collateral person is beyond what I can do. I want the heavier hard recoiling .308 when the extrapower is required.
For longer ranges some of the 6.5's like the 6.5 WSM are guns for those that want to do such things.
So if you can't reliably hit a man size target beyond the 300 yard kill zone, at best you are going to trade exterminating blows with the OPFOR. This is not the recipe for survival? JMHO.
Don't tell others to expect your demise if they have options to perform otherwise!
It's not that hard to perform on the 300 or 600 yard KD Range with simple Boot camp Training. The USMC has done it for decades.
