I paid $8.99 for 20 brass cased, Monarch brand. I don't know how great that price is. Its the first time I have bought any 223, just finished building my lower 5 min. ago.

Fairhope WalMart had 9mm, 40, 45, 5.56 today at 1PM. More ammo than I've seen on the shelf in a long time.

They still have the 223, about 40 boxes of it.. It is Independence brand, owned by Federal Ammunition. They are brass cased with discoloration on the top 1/4th of the casing. I bought 3 boxes, all looked the same way.

Was the brand Independene? Wal Mart on Dawes road in Mobile had 100+ 20 round boxes of it yesterday afternoon.

Independence anneals their cases. Hence the discoloured cases at the neck. Reloads very nicely.

It's quite hard to explain honestly but this article helps quite a bit.

    http://www.6mmbr.com/annealing.html

It's basically a process where you heat a piece of metal past it's critical temperature point and then cool it to increase ductility. Precision rifle shooters swear by this for increased accuracy and brass life on reloading.

That's about the best description I have seen. Most explanations involve hooded monks in dark caves by the light of Saturn. Lmao

There are doctorate level metallurgists out there that can't give concrete reasons to anneal your rifle brass but it seems to a be a very common practice amongst the precision rifle community. The only thing that almost everyone can agree on is that it seems to increase brass life. Basically what you are doing is softening up the case necks when you anneal them.

Yeah, I have been anealing and neck turning .308 rounds for about 15 years. It does make a difference but not one that's noticed inside 600 yards. Once you have done everything possible to the rifle for maximum accuracy then learning to anneal the necks may be on the list of things to do.

That discoloration on the business end of the brass. I see a lot of Lake City brass like that

Correct, that is annealing. From what I understand it is a NATO standard on at least 5.56 but I could be completely wrong.

You are correct sir. The 7x51 and .50 as well. Not sure why they require that process unless its the fact that most mil ammo gets remanufactures at least once before being sold as surplus.
