It is because you need it on something solid, and do not use a reg. punch you will likely bend it, like I said use a taper punch, it is big all the way to end just the last little bit is little. just my 50 cents jj

my neighbor saw me this morning in the garage working on it and came over to help. I'm going to go out to the range with him today and he'll let me shoot his full size rail and said if I'm still into it we can sit down and he'll show me how to get the pins out. Glad everyone is always nice to help a new guy.

How big of hammer were you using?

    This.

Use a 5/16 punch to get it moving then use a 1/8 to push it through. Hit sharply and hard. If you hit softly you may deform the metal and make the job even harder. I've removed taper pins on S&W M&P15s; it can be done. Bushmaster and BCM are notorious though.

had the same issues removing the pins on my Stag upper.

Used the oversize punch, used the taper punch, used a nail punch. Broke 2 starret punches.
    Tried the wood block deal
    Tried heat

Ended up cutting off the front sight. Then used the dremel to split the 2 "rings" that go around the barrel and was able to get them off the barrel leaving just the pins. Then, and ONLY then, could I get the pins to move. What a pain the ass!!!

Yeah if it comes to it I'll just have it cut. I drove by Alabama holsters to see if they were open tomorrow and they are opening back up on Monday so I'll have to wait until then.

Only way I was able to remove mine was using a front sight bench block from Brownells. Cost me $40 plus shipping. I also used a solid bench with a wood block to support the upper receiver. I used a heavy ball peen hammer (24 oz) with a taper punch. I hammered away and it eventually moved. You have to take away any bounce or cushion as it will just absorb the hammer strikes. Good luck!

Did you end up getting these out? I've got hammers and punches and would be happy to give it a try for ya, I don't think you live far from me.

FWIW; I use the FSB as my low profile gas block. Cut it down, shape it and paint it. I have done them without removing, but usually remove them.

Alabama Holster knocked it out for me today. Great people in there, I felt really stupid doing this and they didn't make me feel stupid when I brought it in.
