Looking to get some armor... I know nothing about it, but I figure it's a good thing to have. As far as carrier, I think I'm going with a Ferro Concepts Slickster... any guidance is appreciated. Thanks.

The slickster is pretty nice and comfortable. For plates take a look at SKD. IMO stay away from AR500 or other metal plates. They are heavy and even with anti-spall coating I wouldn't trust them.

You sure have to jump through some hoops to order from SKD as a civilian.

If you have a decent idea on what size you'd need, browse thru tacswap.com, but tread careful, there's scammers floating thru there more than on here.

A while back I did some youtube looking. Relative to wt, it seemed that the composite plates with ceramic and then backed by layers of plastic. These seem to stop any 5.56 projectile and load that a civilian can get. These are light and are somewhere between a level III and IV. I am not sure if there is classification for them yet. While light, they are also bulky.

What is important to remember is that a lot of your anatomy is not covered and you still can be shot to death while wearing one. A close range shotgun blast between the upper thighs for example would likely get your femoral arteries. i have not purchased anything myself along that line.

I've worn London bridge for duty and tactical tailor for training work.

Ar500 the steel plates are more compact and less fragile than ceramic/aramid(sp) composites.

I've seen too many plates busted to shit from folks throwing them in their A bag and tossing em in the patrol trucks. That and the laminate separates from heat and storage conditions. Which steel plates dont do.

One other thing to think about if the weight difference between ceramic and steel is a concern, strength and conditioning training should be a better investment than the IBA.

A few months ago I picked up a Defense Mechanisms PC and some Hesco L210 plates. Both are solid options and not too expensive. I still would like to get a cheap set of steel plates and a cheap carrier for training purposes.

    Just a few questions

When do you plan on wearing them?

Under what situation would they be required?

Would it be better to spend the money hardening your other defenses (car, home, office)?

I have some IIIa plates in bags and in my car. I can see holding them up during an escape or using a bag as a shield - but I do not plan on going into battle or being in any shootouts.

I do plan on putting the plates in my kids backpacks when they go to school.

You have plastic, paper, porcelain, ceramic just depends if you want to do dishes or throw it away after you eat...
