Nice Call Cheryl, proximity is extremly close. halo very large. not to often is it witnessed. Moon illumination is taking away from the visability of the Galilian moons. Not that anyone is really looking?
In South America last night the Moon occulted Jupiter, here it passed 0.5 degrees to the north.
The Sun, Moon and all the planets travel roughly the same path accross the sky. This is called the "ecliptic". It is also the plane of the solar system. Comets however can come from any direction as their orbits do not nesscessarily fall within the plane.
Two comets are scheduled to make an appearence this year, and are expected to be quite spectacular. An evening comet is coming in March, a morning comet in December.
The halo around the Moon last night was beautiful, and lasted most of the night.
