Colt built this guy initially for the military market of the early 1900s when self loaders weren't quite there yet. Militaries bought them here and there but it was never a barn burning success in that regard. Colt changed the marketing in the late 1920s because it was quite popular with police forces, so the Army Special turned into the Police Positice. Effectively the same action, but with different options and configurations for the police market.

I shouldve specified that I was curious about the history of this particular frame. I have a loose understanding of the chronology from the New Model 1892 to the PP. He could pretty much spin any old yarn he'd want to, Im less than sober and would like a fanciful story to buy.

Are you sure it's not a 38 S&W (Special) model. Colt despised S&W and their choice of wording on the barrel was to avoid any acknowledgement of S&W. I have one from 1912 with the same markings and its in .38 Special. The only other .38 caliber offering was the .38/200 until 1927 when it became the "Official Police" model, then other calibers were offered.

Mine is a 38 Special. I understand they sold it under both 38s and were selective about markings for brand purposes. Like Marlins being written as 30-30 so they didn't have to write 30 Winchester Centrefire on their guns.

How about more pics of revolver and here’s a good article.

And don’t know why the link says age verify, the article is titled the other 38s
