I understand the U-notch is for the buffer retaining pin, but why are some tubes made without it? I thought with the notch it helped keep from screwing it in too far. I just wound up with one that doesn't have it.
    Someone please dispell my ignorance...

If you're talking about what I think you are; the notch is a newer addition and still not what I would call a "standard" offering.

Yeah now I read that true mil-spec didn't have them. I used one on my Grendel build, and it wasn't a big deal as I had bought the jig to hold the buffer tube straight while you torque & stake the castle nut. And Armaspec says you don't really need the retainer pin with their captured silent buffers.
    Thanks.

Not all are created equal. Notch or no notch. I'll never build anything with an off brand tube again. Had one that was out of spec. Would fire a couple times and then the buffer and spring would end up in the trigger area and good luck finding the detent pin in usable condition. Another turn and the upper wouldn't mate to the lower because the pin protruded. Backed it off and was good, or so I thought.

That's where a file and fixing comes into play, don't know what rec you had but it could have been the Rec.. Just some food for thought.. and my 50 cents jj
It was a spikes receiver. Replaced it with a BCM tube and all was good.
