If I had to guess..... They will try to ram it when the next big distraction comes along.

They are still bent on removing guns from the hands of honest americans. But what they were proposing would never stand up to any judicial review.
Perhaps we get hit again by a biden executive order the next time going after any AR.

It is on the top 3 of what biden will issue as an executive order for as soon as he gets in. So they had nothing to lose by dropping it now
    Yes, sir!
You ever had an extra can of worms and opened to see what they would do.....now they know how we will rebuttle when the time becomes real.

I suspect that they were startled by the response of absolute refusal of many in the gun community, even talking of killing feds.
I predict that they go the easy button. Either stop or make sales of imported sales of ammunition super expensive. Regulate future sales of 'assault' weapons' or more likely tax them and try to register them.

I had "heard" that any pistols with scopes were going to be put in the sbr category, due to the eye relief. Probably more internet bs.
By their definitions, they would have been considered as SBRs because the whole "one handed thing" as well as a magnified optic. The whole thing stank of just trying to come up with some bullshit overreaching rules that they never so much as thought about what they would actually encompass.

What happen likely is some big shot lobbyists that are in control of biden sent their servants to talk to the Obama appointees in the ATF. These people had to come up with something and they go to someone lower on the ATF to come up with something. They tried braces. The Biden people say yeah, go for it over the holidays.
In my conversation with liberal pro-control people, they have no idea of the opposition that such proposals will cause. They say pass a law and the Trumpists and male dominated what ever will fold. They have no idea that they are dealing with political dynamite.

BIG WIN: No. Little win: No. Did ATF /DOJ say due to the vast majority of public support being against the intended methodology prescribed in the Notice the Issue no longer being considered? WTFU!

I think far to many people read the headlines but not the content. The origional "Notice" stated that ATF was not required(*) to provide any Public Notice or Open Public Comment period. THE ONLY THING THAT HAPPENED IS ATF Action: Withdraw Notice. That only means ATF PULLED the Notice from the Federal Register, I searched it's gone without explanation. It means no further comments are being accepted. What happens to Comments previously submitted? Where did they go? They will not have a reference document to be attached to any longer. Are they "E" deleted and paper to the circular file? ATF Withdrew the Notice, they no longer have a responsibility to Review or Address them publicly (its uncertain if was even going to happen).

    * That "Not Required" means they (ATF/DOJ) could have (and can now) proceeded and make Final Document without public Notice or public comment period. By Withdraw they have just eliminated all public Pro/Con issues without addressing a single one.

Watch the gun control orgs for comments by their high level leaders. They get inside gun grabber info, if they aren't bitching about ATF/DOJ "Change of Official position/direction it because "they know" it hasn't Changed, just going behind closed doors as they await the big reveal!

But, dance in the streets and celibrate if you want.

It is wise to be cautious and still on guard for more treachery. Of course this is not a victory, but only one battle of many to come. On Jan 20th If I was them, this is assuming some logic to their actions, they would issue their new guidelines in some form that manufactures and everyone else could follow. To actually win a case against someone in a functioning court of justice, there has to be some understandable criteria.
I do not think anyone is dancing in the streets over their strategic withdrawal of this action. But it is still significant that they did so.

Kinda like opening the door in the morning then closing it because it's cold. Still have to go outside, just need to be more prepared. They will be prepared now as well.

If they are publishing in the FR in anticipation of the proposal becoming law I do not know of a way around the comment period. The problem, as we all know, is the ATF rules by white paper and does not follow the law themselves.
