People always seem to think that the original blackpowder load of just a little short of 1000 fps in the 7.5 barrel is anemic. Not only that it needs to loaded to hot .44 mag ballistics.
Elmer Keith believed in getting his hardcast semi-wad cutter to about 1200 fps for his shooting needs and that seems quite sound me.
There is nothing wrong with stoking revolvers up carbine level of velocity. It is a lot of recoil, but what ever floats your boat.

I've shot "stuff" with it, works just fine. 185gr leverlution ftx "weak" factory load. Yote did "Hollywood" flip, drt. Blowed up. Since switched to the 225gr. .452 much more accurate.

Wasnt the colt designed to be able to drop a cavalry horse. Personally even old loads is plenty
The original loads of black powder were loaded into balloon head cases that had a greater volume than modern solid head cases. Shorter .45 schofield revolver cartridges that also fitted the .45 colt revolvers and so often weaker loads were actually used. The claim is it was possible to get 40 grains of BP power into the balloon head .45 colt case.
