    Do I need a 20 MOA rail?

    - Bolt action 308win with a 20” barrel and twist rate of 1:10
    - Scope has 60 MOA of adjustment -30/+30
    - Probably won’t shoot over 500yards

Thanks for your reply. I had been seeing that answer on line a lot, but wanted to hear from local guys.

Depending on the specific ammo, at 500 yards, you're looking in the neighborhood of 11.5 MOA or 3.4 MILS... you can actually just hold for that with a good scope.

I usually just use holds out to 300 anyway.

with a zero moa rail/mount you should be able to dial up to well over 1000 yds

I don't think so with a scope that has roughly 30 min to work with... below is just a rough data point, looks like it will come up 8 MOA short at best. Sample is a 168gr Match bullet with a BC of about .462 launched at 2700 FPS.

    Range- 1000 Yds
    Vel at 1000- 1189
    Drop- 398 inchs
    -398.4
    Come up MOA- 38
    Come up MILS- 11.1

Ohhhh damn that’s not a lot of built in adjustment. Maybe you do need the 20MOA rail then

If I go with the 20MOA will I be able to dial in shots under 100 yards?
