This buck here was at one of my stands about 45 minutes before I got to the stand to sit down this morning, sat til 10:15 then walked out jumping a couple of does before I got back to my Trooper, got back in here at 1:38 and sitting til dark tonight, several fresh scrapes made since this morning, still no rut, bucks still together here.

Scared a spike away about 3:20, throat got to tingling with an itch coming on and held the cough as long as I could, grabbed my water bottle but didn’t help, had to let it out and cough, spike looked my way and ran off , never snorted or blowed. May have a head cold coming on, pulled out my emergency flask and took a nip, cough immediately subsided. I don’t advocate drinking and hunting, just had this for the cough , wonder if deer can smell the whiskey? Cough ran him off before I ever pulled the flask out. Had to have some relief.

I dislike taking a shot real late in the day. I have concerns about locating the deer in the dark if it runs. I don't want to kill a deer and not be able to find it.

This brings up a good topic. How do you guys track a shot deer in the dark that has been shot and has run?

With a good bright flash light.

In 2020 I shot one at dark, could not find blood. Luckily it was cool, found him the next morning, less than 50 yards from where I shot him. The coyotes had not found him, either.

Calling in a dog is also an option.

But, I only shoot bucks late. I do my doe killing in the morning.

for whatever reason, probably 75% of all deer I have taken were before noon.

I had a little beagle that never felled to find a downed deer. He was so good he got to ride in the front seat of the truck instead of the bed. He found deer for many different folks in his life. His reputation covered several county’s , he was the best I’ve ever seen.

Just text me. I'll look for him in March.

Same area I told you about last year just on the West side of the creek. I’m sure he’s all over in there though. What’s weird is I’ve only seen them alone and not the huge flock I was seeing last year. Big coyotes in the area too
