Here's the Shuff's Mini G (16.1" barrel) in .35 Whelen with 2-7 Scout Scope - from the same rest. 14 rds of 200gr Hornady Superformance ammo at 100 yards.
Remember guys, scout scopes and the way that they are mounted are not(IMO)designed for precision work. Of course Jeff Cooper could probably disagree. The eye relief, the scope parallax, proper cheek weld that is CONSISTENT from shot to shot, all plays a part in the accuracy of this/any scout scope setup. Also the fact that it is mounted on a semi-auto with the type of gassed action that a Garand has could make the setup less accurate.
I have rarely seen bolt guns with a "scout" setup shoot very accurately. But easily within the parameters needed to "kill stuff". I had the privilege to shoot one of them Jeff Copper scout setups some years ago. It was chambered in 308Win. Several of us could barely maintain 2.5MOA with the gun.
Personally,I would be happy with the target in post #2. --- SAWMAN
Thanks sawman that makes me feel better. I do plan to put the rifle in a lead sled and see how it groups - then make an adjustment. I'm thinking it needs to go about one inch to the right.
I was looking for 2 inches high at 100 yards so the .35 Whelen would be dead on at 200 yards. This definitely isn't a long range set up - but will be used as a brush gun here in AK.
A couple years after I shot the "Jeff Cooper" in 308Win the same gun chambered in 376Steyr came up for sale for $600. Should have jumped on it but was "late to the party".
Since then i have shot someone elses and it reminded me of the older 350 Rem Mag. --- SAWMAN
This started out as a field grade M1 Garand. I sent it off to Shuff's Parkerizing where he refinished it, converted it to a Mini G and added the .35 Whelen barrel and Ultimak scout rail.
He had to mill out some of the ribs in the magazine in order to allow it to accept a full 8-round enbloc clip with the larger .35 bullets.
Also installed an adjustable gas plug.
I'm pleased with how it turned out and I hope to take it on a spring bear hunt this May in Prince William Sound.
