    It depends. I mounted or had mounted a burris scout scope yrs ago to a garand rifle on the barrel. A major downside was that barrel really got hot. I did not ruin the scope, but in that case it was not the best solution. The mount was steel and transmitted heat perfectly. On my ak the ultimak rail is part of the gas cylinder and it gets hot too. I think the aim point on it can take that heat.

    In most respects, no. If you look at it as "less connections or moving points" the reciever is better.
