      That's good idea. That way there is no possibility of a round being in the chamber itself. I will look into those. i will look into altus as well as long as its just basic+ gun training. I have no desire to be mr operator if you get my drift.

      Also in case anybody wants to know. The .308 kicks like a horse. My M&P 10 kicks way harder than my M1A does. The stock on my M&P 10 is to short, (this is a CA Pinned stock + shark fin grip model). My M1A stock is also to short. I supposed i should get some Stock extenders.

      Thanks. First time I ever shot a rifle, so I would hate for this to have gone bad for me (or anyone else). I think I should take this as lesson learned. like suggested, follow the range rules (all of them) and get some formal training on firearms. Most of this is self-taught. research etc.

      i was close on this. the rifle wasnt loaded, nor was it charged, and my finger was no where near the trigger. so at least there is that.

      So yes, the range was hot and there were other people at the range. So in that regard pointing the barrel anywhere but down range was in an unsafe direction.

      Thanks for the answer. I appreciate it. In this case that was a violation of the ranges rules, and one i don't intend to make again. I was just trying to get a feel for how common a mistake like that might be.
