Maybe I am a smidge out of the loop, but I just went to a local shop attempting to consign one of my handguns just to see if maybe they can move it before me.

Got a funny feeling when all of a sudden the 15% became 20%, and then back again... made me a smidge uneasy that they would make that "mistake" conveniently later.

Then, apparently they do background checks for ME if I try to come back and get my own damn handgun, and of course its not 5$ like usual, but almost 50 bucks.

Am I off base here? Is a background check on a damn gun you already own a thing? I have never heard of that before, and certainly never heard of a background check picking up a firearm from service or something.

    Thoughts?

They want to make sure the gun and the seller aren't hot. Makes sense to me. My line of work has similar stuff happen with stolen cars and people trying to flip them through another party as the seller. Similar to gun stores doing background checks on the gun someone brings in, we run checks on every car we work with.

you would think that they would waive the fee for the background check if they are planning on selling the firearm and pocketing some of the cash.

ya know, like how consignments usually work.

cant comment on industry standards, but my FFL would get a good scousing were he to try and charge that much for a check.

If that's standard, that's ludicrous. How is it any different from taking a gun to a gunsmith?

No transfer has occurred if no sale has taken place. It's none of their damn business at that stage.
Read the law before you get butt hurt.

    Or take your business elsewhere.

    Or sell your gun yourself.

Or lament here and take face shots.

When I had my FFL any gun in my shop had better be in my book. If on consignment a 4473 had to be done to let the owner take it home. It works the same way in a pawn shop. I believe gunsmith have a different FFL and are not required to do a background check to return it to you.

That's not that case. They would have my name, address, CWP, and everything else. Someone would have to be special-stupid to sell a hot weapon through an FFL.

The "law" can say whatever it wants, but in no way does that mean I am not going to call it out for being FUCKING RETARDED, and if you have a problem with that, that sounds like a "you problem".

If you are taking it to a gun shop, chances are you are asking too much to begin with.
50 seems like a rip. I'd think 5 for background check and let it ride, but I'm not in the gun business.

I hope you asked this all upfront and didn't let them "take" your money

You are fired up today man! Take a break from the AM radio stations.

Take a walk. Breathe. Get laid. Live a little bit.
Already did all of the above.
Perhaps between my business and hobbies, ALL of which have the tentacles of government shoved up my ass, I just realize more than most how fucked up this country and our system of laws and regulations actually are, and how arbitrary it all is except for one very important detail: TAXES/FEES.

Possibly, sure. Given that 99.9% of society is composed of entitled cheap fucks, yeah... I am sure everyone wants something for nothing like usual, and I dont need the money badly enough to let them have their way.

I walked out with my firearm, out of principle. I would rather keep it than get fucked in the ass on fees and percentages.

People would have to be stupid to sell a stolen car at a dealer but we definitely see it...
And given that you are talking about my literal industry, 99.999% of the time, those people had no idea it was stolen, and bought it stolen having no clue. Usually, it even slips through the DMV cracks in those cases.

***REGARDLESS***.... that has far more to do with local police than an NICS check.
