This rifle belonged to my maternal grandfather. He passed away in 1947 from tuberculosis. After his death my grandmother sold the gun to a family friend. Years later in the 1970’s the family friend gave the gun to my mother, he knew it was a family heirloom, and that it belonged in our family. It has never shot straight, the barrel is pitted. I would like it to be shootable. I’ve heard of re-boring and rifling an old gun. Maybe to .357 in this case, not sure. Anyone know anything about this, and who may be able to do it? Maybe I should just leave it as is?
I had a Cowboy shooter make me a pretty big offer on the gun once, it is not for sale.
    Mechanically the action works perfectly.

The first thing I would do would be to recrown the barrel, clean it well, and shoot with jacketed ammo to see it accuracy improves.

If the gun's barrel is relined, could it be set up in .327
It might be easier to get the lifter to work.

The .327 Federal Magnum provides performance similar to the high-velocity rifle loadings of the old .32-20 Winchester,
It has a higher pressure than the .357 and so i do not know if it is safe to do in a 92 winchester. The 92 is supposed to have a very strong lever action.
    45,000 PSI

The . 327 Federal Magnum's case has an astounding SAAMI rating of 45,000 PSI

    Thank you.
    That is very good information.

One could test the lifter with a .327. If you can find a .327 round, see it if will feed from the tube into chamber. DO NOT FIRE IT. I do not know if the case will split or not. Best is not to do it.

I shot the gun quite a lot in the 1970’s. It functioned perfectly back then. It just would not shoot straight. Bullets hit all over the paper. Looking through the barrel, it is easy to see the pitting with the naked eye.

It has enough thickness to be lined, but see if the crown is bad. Many of these rifles were cleaned from the muzzle that damaged the crown.

    Thank you.
Gonna take it to a Pro Gunsmith I know and get him to evaluate the rifle.

Realistically could get it rebarreled to 3220 or see if its lead built up and not pitting

Pretty sure it’s pitted. I’ve run copper brushes through it a lot.

You could have it sleeved to 256 Winchester magnum. This is a 357 Magnum Whole Net down to 25 caliber shoots the same bullet as a 25-20. It is incredibly effective on coyotes. Simple enough to find a 25-20 sleeve all you have to do is chamber for the 256

Cost of getting it reline runs from about 400 -600 , Most people that I talked to says after being reline they shoot better. Look on reliine at midway usa is one place to see what it takes. I'm looking at doing a marlin. that's in a 30-30. so doing a lot of research. Just my 5 cents jj
