I liked your rant comment more, feeling better? There's always Capt. Ron's Blackwater Range. --- SAWMAN
If not AP (black tips) I would give the Barnes 150-165 TSX a try. They are long,so you would have to check mag length for your particular gun.
Expensive, but you (IMO) would not need more that 100 or so. I have some 130gr Rem Hog Hammer "pulls". These are similar to the TSX . . BUT . . have a much longer ogive. I cut one in half . . solid copper.
Now,the Hornady GMX line is actually harder than the solid coppers from Barnes so they might just be another option. --- SAWMAN
I have seen photos of pickups said to shot up with corbons using the lighter barnes bullets in a AK and they did make some pretty good holes in the body of the trucks from gunfights in the southwest or northern mexico. What I am not sure about is if they are superior to routine fmj ball ammo. I have a lot basic pulled fmj us military 30-06 150 grain bullets on hand.
Re: reloading for the hk91 rifles
be cautious using heavier than standard 147 gr. bullets without matching up with the proper locking piece to insure you have the correct timming of the unlocking mechanism. You can damage the gun. Check www.hkpro.com for some suggestions. Most especially true if you shoot the 93. The 91 standard locking piece angles are pretty forgicing up to about 165 gr or so. Different locking piec angles for different classes of loadings. You might not notice damage but it is happening. just be careful and do a little research. Also make sure you check your headspace/bolt gap if you change the locking piece. have some extra + and - rollers on hand and periodically check. If you notice harsher than normal recoil, your locking piece or rollrs may be worn. Look for a gap of .018 ideal, and accuracy and general shootability will be improved. These are complicated little systems and while rugged and utterly reliable, they need maintenance and tuning too...https://forum.snipershide.com/threads/reloading-for-the-hk91-rifles.27691/
For reference . . . my HK 91 AND 93 will shoot anything.
My 93 has shot handloads that shread brass. It has shot quite a few different brands/manufacturers of mil ammo. None of which were steel cased. Some of the hotter was Malaysian.
I have loaded 110's to 200gr round nose. HOT !!
MY 93 pretty much the same. No steel but pretty much everything else. Super hot handloads also. Both guns will feed empty brass.
I have never owned a PTR or G3. --- SAWMAN
Shit. I'm kinda hoping I could have seen your original post. Was it something along the lines of we could all go up there with thigh holsters and shoot ourselves in the femoral while practicing tuck and roll draw from a moving vehicle?I do think about things before I post. Then post. Then read it as posted. If it looks like I should not have posted it as is,I change or delete.
I am glad however that some targeted individuals got the unique chance to say to themselves . . "yep,Sawman is right again".
Thank you. --- SAWMAN
The cost of ammo vs the cost of a gun. Steel may wear a barrel faster, especially if you do a lot of magazine dumps. Figure out of the cost of new barrel vs the cost of 5,000 rounds of .308 ammo for steel and brass case ammo. A PTR91 is a bullet spitter. I can not see much more than 100 yards on my place and can not legally justify a shot at much past to 200 yards in most cases to a grand jury. A 2.5 to 4 MOA rifle shooting steel case will do the job. Note to know what you rifle will do under real combat conditions. Start with a cold barrel and fire the whole mag and then look at the 20 round group.FS, just my philosophy on using steel in my "important" guns.
For me (IMO) in a $399 AR15 or a G3/Century PTR type,steel would be ok(?) . . IF . . I could not afford brass.
Some people that are quick to use steel in a $1500. AR would never think about doing it in a $1500. hunting rifle or competition gun. RIGHT ?? --- SAWMAN
I have an after market mount that is clamp or held on with screws that push/pull wedges instead of claws. I have been worried about how secure it is.I have the ORIGIONAL HK claw lock(cam type) lock for my 91. After I got the mount, I mounted a 4-16X40 Bushnell on it and gave it a try.
Can't remember the factory ammo used but it was a 180gr round nose. (This was about 1982'ish) Off a makeshift bench and bags at 100yds it was 2.5MOA. I took the mount and scope off, simply un-cammed it,re-installed it,three different times, and the POI was exactly the same.
IIRC,the cam/claw mount was about $180. . . . BACK THEN. --- SAWMAN
A HK91 is G3 with civilian trigger pack and something else done to the bolt carrier or what ever it is called in the G3 so it will not work with a full auto trigger group. For reference . . . my HK 91 AND 93 will shoot anything.
