Way to pile on SM. Any reference from his post to support the demands for definitions? Geeze!

Go burn some meat on the fire pit.

RR. for the non-ship wise explain the difference between "line" and rope on a larger ship?
Line is mostly synthetic, plasma, nylon, Kevlar. 6-12 strands. Rope is normally hemp, Manila or some other fiber. Usually 3 strands. We use some rope on board.

We use the term, cable and wire for the same thing as well. The steel cables are normally 6 strands, but can be up to 12. The good cable has a solid spring steel core, we don't get any of that, too many jackasses parting them. Some we have has a nylon core and the really cheap stuff has no core. Braiding eyes in steel cable sucks. BTW. I have a cable repair pending not looking forward to it. It's amazing how many different types of rope, line and cable there are.

And "wire" and "cable" or "propeller" and "screw" and "wheel" ??
Is a "cleat" on the dock or on the bottom of baseball shoes ??
Did the Edmund Fitsgerald really haul 26,000 tons more, than it weighed empty ?? --- SAWMAN
Captians used to recieve a tonnage bonus, so overloading was common. Like cargo piled on the deck after the holds were full.

Unloading at 7H. Hopper unload. Unloading at about 4,500t an hour. Cargo goes in the hopper then onto a belt and is moved closer to the furnace. You can see the worlds largest open air shooting range from here (Chicago) Be back out at midnight to rinse cargo holds.

Supposed to be September 28, but new word from the office. "No reliefs until further notice" so we will see.
When I worked on the lakes years ago the lakes normally froze up with winter since it is fresh water.
We saw a lot of ocean going craft that came in from the saint Lawrence seaway. Some of it was grain going out , but I assume a lot of it was incoming cargo from overseas. Many of the lake towns do have ocean going ports like Chicago.

Thanks James. Can you hear the gunshot at night ??
I understand that President Trump did not want to name "shit hole" US cities while he was talking about shit hole countries . . . but we clearly have them. Chi-town is a great example.

More pix, some shots at the locks and approaches. Last pix shows, they are dredging out the older locks so they can start using them, per grant from TRUMP!
