So my dad had a coworker who gave him this mystery rifle, story is her grandma or somebody got it on a safari in Africa, anyways we can't figure out what it is, no English words, or even any Latin letters on it. Looks like a mauser action but no markings to say exactly what, looks to be re-purposed military rifle. But any info is appreciated.

Yea I thought it was a sporterized one, but I'm really curios as to what variant it is. Thanks donr I'll look for "boer rifles" and see what comes up.
I'll also load some pics of the sights after awhile and see if anyone knows what language it is.

Edit: a friend of mine text and said remington makes a Mauser called the 799, is that true?
Should have mentioned earlier that 799 is stamped on the bottom of the recovered and in the channel of the stock. Of course if it was remington I would think it would be stamped on the receiver somewhere.

Not a Muaser...but rather a sporterized 1920 ShtLE (Short Lee-Enfield) Wild Tiger Corps No.1 MkIII* Rifle. Turns out it is one of 10k run that was made for the King of Siam (Thailand) in 1920. " The Siamese "Wild Tiger Corps" composed of mainly civil servants. The King at that time attended Sandhurst as an officer cadet so his choice of rifles is understandable. They are one of the harder to find rifles. " (1) I recognized the writing on the receiver as being either Indian or Thai as to origin...looked at turned down bolt handle and metal next to it to get the Lee-Enfield receiver look. Second link is to another forum where this rifle type is discussed. Nice 90+ yr old rifle, what caliber is it...? Its serial No. is 71666 by my deciphering per fist link

Ric-san thanks for the link. The bolt was turned down as part of it being sporterized. I looked at the lee-enfield you mentioned and it isn't one of those. The Siamese numbers however did match, so I looked up Siamese Mauser, and it appears to be a 1903 type 45/66 Mauser.

Here is a video explaining the rifle, apparently it was made in Japan.
