For the price, the ATI Omni Hybrid Max ($399 or less) would be a great starting point and wait until around BF2020 and maybe buy a bunch of lighter individual options (barrel, buttstock and the like). That would definitely make it a sub 5 lb rifle, most of the other ones in the article cost $$$$. I’m actually getting all the parts together to build a retro XM-177E2/ 5-GUU style rifle in the coming year if I can find the right lower.

Sold my omni. I couldn't believe they build a 3.5 lb rifle. Crazy, but cool. Did ya shoot the lightweight? Been thinking about building a a1 retro for fun. Your right though the lowers are not out there or priced too damm high. Saw some orginal uppers for 125+ but are rough. Have to paint or get them re annozied .

Finally got out to shoot this rifle at JJ’s place. Ran two separate function checks. First one round to check if bolt would cycle and then hold open. Checked good. Second function check was with two rounds, re-run of check No.1 and see if it would load follow on round. Checked good. JJ even fired a few rounds and liked the rifle, said it would make a good house defense gun OR truck gun. Next time out will zero the sights. Only addition was Magpul folding sights to the build.

Just added See All sight, works great, a little heavier than irons (plastic crap) on steel at 300 10 for 10 with tula. I think with the poly reciever its < 4.6 lbs. 450 rds with no cleaning, still chugging along 0 issues. Funny thing is the KT su16 is 4.6 factory, lol.

Where is the balance with weight and price? How light can you get for around 7 or 800?

As mine was made pre pandemic, the price was right around $500. I shopped decent parts that were on sale. Lots of BF 2018/19 purchases. JJ liked the MFT brand minimalist stock. I looked it up today, w/o tube it cost right at $50 + s/h; I paid $34 on sale w/free ship last year. When I have some time, I’ll price it out in today’s money.

The stock su16 is 4.6 lbs. Folds and has bipod.. And used is about $400 this is the a i have the c model, fires from folded position too.
And the pistol version is safe to have around your AR rifles with risking being charged with "intent" and still have mag and ammo compatibility with your AR rifles

For anyone contemplating a “lite” build use this helpful website which lists individual ar-15 parts by weight. Don’t forget also that no “diet” is cheap...

    AR-15 parts weight database

    Here ya go...

Love it. Carried it today. Hoping to poke a hole in one of the many sneaky yotes. Picked up a few more dings and scuffs, but thats what tools get when ya use em.

Well that sight is certainly different. I'll have to check out some vids and reviews.
