Found a hog in a field that we had not hunted in awhile. Because of a security light on a tall pole about 500yds away I could not advance into the field and had to shoot from the tree line.
This hog was also surrounded by feeding deer, probably 10-12 of them. They will bust you and run, scareing any hogs close by.
The shot was about 120yds. I had to come off my thermals native power of 3X to 6X. When you do this with thermal, the target starts to get somewhat fuzzy and pixelated.
I had to wait for a FULL broadside shot. This hog was about 85 yds from the nearest treeline so if he ran a ways it would not matter. I am shooting a Barnes 85gr TSX out of my 18" 6.8 at 3100fps.
These Barnes solid copper bullets need to hit bone going in to help fold back the petals anyway.
With the high shoulder hit the hog dropped and only kicked several times.
He was DRT. About a 120lb boar with smallish cutters.
Hooked him up and drug him out of the peanut field. ---- SAWMAN

Could have been doable with NV . . WITH . . an aftermarket IR illuminator with some power to it. The focus'able kind would be my pick.
James, get your shit, come out,and we'll give it a try.
The ideal would be a guy with a thermal taking you part way to the target until it could be picked up with NV. Then let the NV guy finish the stalk. --- SAWMAN

Chaps and I went and dragged the hog to the "graveyard" and then set up a camera to see if we can could get a photo of either Bigfoot or a panther eating it. Setting up a camera was something we'd been wanting to do, and Sawman killing a hog nearby presented the perfect opportunity for us. The property owner asked if we'd go check his baited hog trap (nothing and no corn eaten) for him as he was busy with a class.

Love the shot placement on that hog!
