If your digging those are yellow jackets. Nasty mf'rs
There are local critters that at night will dig up those nests. Armadillos, skunks, Badgers, wolverines, weasels, Shrews and moles may eat yellowjackets as they burrow underground, too.

No, that’s to kill ground nests lol
Gasoline works quite well for that. Get a 10 foot pipe with an elbow on your end. When nest is calm crawl on the ground with that 10 ft section and put at least cup down to sort of quiet them down. Once there is no obvious activity get closer to apply a lot of gas or pesticide to kill the colony.
Do not light the gasoline. It will kill on contact and its fumes will also hurt the wasps.

When I lived in Alabama, while fueling my mower I dropped the gas cap right on top of the unseen opening in the ground. I got stung so many times my hand swelled up like a cantaloupe
    one word: RUN

If one runs on the first sting, only a few will follow you.

Little off topic, I heard this from my uncles that came from the "old country" in eastern Europe. "When you think its time to bury your guns, its time to dig them up."
