    Welcome.

Your post made me curious enough to lookup why it is called Freeport., FL and I am assuming it is Freeport, Florida. I have come across that place name before and was curious. I love trivia lol.

    ORIGIN OF THE NAME “FREEPORT”
Freeport was first known as Genoa and later Four Mile Landing. During the Civil War, Four Mile Landing began to be referred to as Freeport, literally because there was no charge to dock at the port area at the junction of Four Mile Creek and LaFayette Creek. Another locally circulated story is that at some point in that time period, an unclaimed shipment of wine was discovered in the port area and everyone in the area was encouraged to come have a little “free port”! https://www.freeportflorida.gov/bc-citycouncil/page/welcome-freeport

Well . . . that surely don't look like the home of L.L. Bean. --- SAWMAN
Looks like the south prior to railroads and highways being built. Find a bayou going where you wanted and then with a tug push a barge with a steam engine and boom on it, go dredge yourself a canal to get there.

The coastal rivers of the gulf were extensively so dredged to get timber out.
Look at an area of the escambia river wet lands. anytime you see a straight channel is something that was was most likely dredged. Even when irregular the dredges to some extent often removed some of the the curves. Same steam engine set up with a winch could also pull the logs to the water for transport. Still a lot of sunken logs around in the mud from those days.
