It does seem like there aren’t enough tags AND who the heck decided it had to be a night hunt?

Plenty of tags... in fact, phase 4 application started yesterday and there is a pile of first come first serve leftovers.
Also, as of this year, you can hunt 24 hours a day during the allotted days, as apposed to 5pm to 10am like it's been for years. That being said, the best time to go is from 2am to daylight.
