Very cool. Follow the link. Water levels are lower in lake huron/Michigan. You have to come up 21 feet to match the water level in superior. 64 degs, brrrr.

64* and you are in a T-shirt "Hard Core" , running that latitude West gives me ideas for a summer location. Lots of "gun friendly" states and cool weather for trips to a range.

Many years ago I worked on an ore boat called the JP Morgan Junior. It was a coal burner and we did go through those locks to reach Duluth MN to pick up taconite ore that was transported to US steel mills in the lower lakes that are now in many cases closed. The ports were in lower lake michigan and also lake erie. We went to places like gary and cleveland.

water depth is important for locks of course and even more important to get into company dredged dock areas for unloading/loading. The big issue is being on those lakes at the end of the season. About the first of September they tied a line from stern to the bow area across the cargo hatches. I was told it so that in a storm if the people forward needed to reach the life boats in the rear they could use that line for safety. when loaded the deck of that ore boat was less than three feet above the water.
Those lakes are beautiful. The sleeping bear dunes of lake michigan were a sight to behold being on the Michigan side of the lake.
The dirtiest water way in those days was the River in Cleveland. Filthy for sure and in the old days that river would regularly catch fire.

On the hook outside Duluth right now waiting to get into BN5 to load iron ore then off to Gary. Steak night and fireworks this eve. Dropped the hook (anchor) @ 430 am. Working on boat projects.

I grew up in Gary, Ind. When I worked on the lakes the mill in downtown Gary was operating. I do not know if that is true any longer. The steel companies built more modern plants further east on the lakes. A few hundred yards from the mill entrance was 5 th ave that had a lot of whores.
