I just ordered some in coyote for my Sig P230. Needed to do something to this gun, so I thought I would give this stuff a shot. If it comes out okay, then I'm going to do something to a 1911. I'll post pics after I'm done.

I have used alumahyde a couple of times now and I have learned a little by trial and error. Hope this helps you to avoid some work.

Heat the gun, and the paint to around 100 degrees before spraying. It will allow you to get a smoother more consistent finish. I put the gun in the oven for a bit, and I used hot water to heat the paint can.

Put it on thin! I put way too much on a 1911 and ended up refitting everything.

Don't wait the 5 days that they say to handle it, I put mine in the oven for 6 hours at 180* and it was cured and ready to go.

Here is the Colt that I did while I was reassembling it.

Alumahyde just came in, so I'll probably get it done tomorrow. I tore the pistol down earlier this week and have been waiting. How did you heat the parts to around 100? My oven doesn't go that low and I don't want to put the parts in water.

I just put my oven on the lowest setting and let it get warm up with the parts in it for 10 minutes after cleaning and degreasing them was probably hotter than 100 degrees but I already had everything hanging on wire so it wasn't an issue handling it.

The rust is from primarily being my ankle carry gun. Had to do something.

Just got the four thin coats on and it's in the oven. About 4-5 hours and I can start putting it back together. Looks good right now, but we'll see once it's done curing. If it turns out great, I'll definitely be using this stuff again. It's super easy.

The slide came out great. I would definitely suggest blasting the aluminum frame. It didn't seem to bond to it as well as the steel. Maybe a little too slick. Overall, I am very happy with how it turned out. The rust is off and now the slide is protected. This has always been one of my favorite EDC's.

Looks good! Any problems getting it back together due to paint thickness?

No problem at all, glad that it was a success. You will have to let us know how well the finish wears, I haven't carried anything that I have coated. Now, If you're anything like me, you are going to be searching for gun's to paint...

That turned out pretty good. Any particular reason that you chose that product over Cerakote? Just curious. It does look good though.

I used it because I can get a spray can of it for 10 bucks from brownells. Easy way to try something out without much of any investment.

Its hard to go wrong with $12. All that matters is that you are happy with it.

    Tim,
I was meaning to get some of mine to you, but I am in Birmingham and don't make it down to Pcola as often as I used to. Otherwise, this one would have been at your place. I wanted to try this stuff out and had a need on this particular gun. $12 is hard to beat, but we'll see how long it lasts. I don't torture my weapons, but this one is in my boot everyday. It doesn't get thrown around in a truck, but it sees it's fair share of sweat. Hence the rust on the previous finish.
