How big are said varmints? Smaller then a hog? 5.56 imho is all you would need. Now you can take hog All day long with 5.56, drops them dead if you shoot them in the ear. I’ve dropped a few deer with 5.56, 64 gr soft point and 77 otm. All within 100yards and shot placement is key. I’m sure there are far more knowledgeable folks on here so I’m open to hearing their opinions.
Well I'll go with the 5.56 . 16 inch 1:9. Hbar Picked up some American eagle varmit ammo to use. 40 gr I think. Have to shoot and see. Also have "zombie" and 50 something sp.
For varmints,coyotes and smaller,I would reccomend,a 223/5.56 (given the two choices),shooting a <56gr bullet,as fast as possible,out of a 1:7 twist bbl.
Put the bullet on the shoulder of a yote. Other critters, mid body. ---- SAWMAN
Only have 1:9 in 16 inch. Thought the faster twist was better with lighter boolits? <60 gr. I have 1:7 but only 10.5 inch. Was trying to buy. 223 wylde 18 inch but the guy flaked on me. Fracking armslist.
Faster twist (equals rotational velocity) is better for ALL varmint bullets. Makes them open faster coupled with forward velocity and bullet makeup.
I use a 5.56 AR . . 24" . . 1:7 twist. --- SAWMAN
Ok. I'll get another barrel at some point. Anyway just came out of smart, was looking for other bullets to try. Nope! No evil .223 or 5.56. Stupidmart.
I thought the more twist was better for shooting the lower weight bullets and the slower was better for +60 grain and up???
I thought the faster twist was for heavier bullets. The original ar15 had like a 1 in 14” twist for 55 grain but when they went to 62 grain, they went up to 1 in 9”. Of course I have a light on my home defense pistol so what do I know
It takes faster twist(1in7”) to get the heavier bullets spinning/stabilized. Objects at rest tend to stay at rest. That is why I can’t get off this couch!
The LONGER the bullet, the FASTER twist needed.
Your guns twist rate is much more important than forward velocity for bullet stabilization. The rotational velocity of a bullet,on impact helps the bullet open, fragment, etc. For varmint hunters . . this is a good thing. You want your bullet to literally explode. --- SAWMAN
As someone who hunts coyote and hogs quite seriously. .223 over .300 hands down.
Yes, the 1:7 is for the heavies, such as the 69gr and 77gr bullets.
Some rifles with 1:7 will shoot light weight (55gr) bullets ok, but those in the know, discourage it. I have a few 1:7 rifles that will shoot 55gr loads well when UNSUPPRESSED.
I knew better than to launch 55gr loads out of a suppressed AR with 1:7 but did it anyway to check a factory load... my AEM5 is sitting in Ron Allen's (Allen Engineering) shop as I type this getting repaired as a result. I'll never launch a light weight bullet <69 grs. out of a suppressed AR with 1:7 ever again.
When I talked to Ron, who owns/operates Allen Engineering and also happens to be the guy behind the original Ops Inc. 12 Suppressor used on the Mk12, he specifically said DO NOT shoot light weight bullets... no shit.
Wow. Almost 4k. 3x the speed of sound... holy shit. I went with the 20 inch 1:9 heavy straight fluted, hope its accurate, for the light fast stuff. Seems like BCA had a 24. Box o bullets I got was 50gr Am eagle hps. 3325fps at the barrel - according to the box... i'll 0 at 100 yards and see.
