I got an 11.5" handguard that I am contemplating on cutting. I really need a 8.5" - 9" handguard on a new build. I have or can get all the necessary tools needed to cut, smooth out and cold cerekote the handguard. But I'm on the fence with doing it myself or trying to figure out if I should just go to a machine shop and have it done. I'm a cheap bastard with 3 kids in college, so I am on the fense. Anyone have experience with cutting their handguard?

    BTW, it's free-float handguard.

The handguard is for a Dolos take down system, I guess it wouldn't hurt to see if anyone has in this forum. That would be the most sensible right now.

Depending on the handguard and where you want the cut: You will loose some structural strength and it may not handle abuse/impacts well. Cuts within a solid ring of material will leave a stronger end than cutting into skeletonized/vent/mount holes. A straight/squared cut is well worth the few bucks a Machine Shop would charge. YOU need to make sure they know the correct cut line marking AND the long threaded end is the "good keeper end" and the short other end is the trash end.

    Good luck with your project.

If your barrel is too short install a "sound forwarder" extends about 3 inches past the barrel or a short fake can.

I have one of each 5/8 and 1/2. Also 5 inch fake can 5/8.

Rebel - Thanks for the link. I have been to the support page, but "wha'd had happen was" I have a 300 blackout and a suppressor. I switched out the barrel system to the Dolos system and I have a 10" barrel. I thought that I would have room to get to the suppressor's locking mechanism, but as usual, I thought wrong. The locking mech is about 1" too far in the handguard. It sucks, because it is a nice M-Lok handguard.
